This week has seen a lot of blood, sweat, tears (and coffee!) come together  for the Girls and Football SA team as we’ve started implementation of our workshops!

With much anticipation and help from the University of Stellenbosch Female Football team and ETA we started working in the informal settlement of Kayamandi. 20 girls will be a part of our initial program aged 10 to 12 years old for four weeks to start.

We started with introductions and assessing how much the girls knew about football and what they would be able to do. The theme of the day was getting to know each other by playing name games, highlighting rules of the program (like “No Boys Allowed” :)), producing excellent posters depicting football and of course, having some fun while working on hand-eye coordination!

We left the girls with more energy and enthusiasm than we came with, which is hard to believe as we were pretty excited from the start! Seeing girls this age come together, have fun and learn was exactly the motivation we were looking for as the team keeps growing, developing new ideas and expanding our organization.

The team would like to thank the Maties Football team for all their time and dedication. Their experience, expertise and energy are a large part of what made the day so successful.

In addition to the workshops and volunteer training, Girls and Football SA published their first of a regular weekly article on www.supersport.com, South Africa’s leading sports network! Here the team will provide weekly updates on the world of female football, the developments and challenges these athletes face.

Finally, Girls and Football SA is also delighted to be included in the University of the Western Cape’s Sport and Development Conference: Beyond 2010. The team will not only attend but also present an academic work to be published at the conferences Young Researcher Day. Look for more on that next week!
