On Women’s Day in South Africa and to honor the women who paved the way before us, Girls and Football SA organized a girls’ football tournament together with Fives Futbol and hosted by Smile FM DJ Cato Bekker.

Cato opened the event that took place at the Fives Futbol soccer fields in Century City. She spoke about the history of Women’s Day while explaining that today’s event was not only about ‘celebrating’ women, but also about honoring the brave women who protested against the pass laws during apartheid in 1956. She explained that today there is still a need to fight for women’s rights, and that this tournament supports the efforts of Girls and Football SA to empower young women and create an equal playing field. All participating teams provided a donation for Girls and Football SA.

Ten mixed teams competed, making this an awesome opportunity to highlight equality on the field – all teams played with passion and gave 100%!

The FanTaztics won the tournament with 2-0 against The Internationals. In addition to medals and a Fives Futbol plaque, the prizes included several sponsored goods, one of which was tickets to the Cape Town Ballet Spring and Fall show.

It was beautiful to see so many people coming together to honor Women’s Day on the pitch, while remembering the women who fought for their basic human rights in 1956. A huge thank you to Cato Bekker for her amazing energy and to Fives Futbol for supporting Girls & Football SA! Also, a huge thank you to all the teams that came out and donated!
